Stage 01 — Recognition

If AI had to decide whether your business exists as a clear, consistent entity — would it hesitate?

No hesitation — our name, category, and description are identical across our website, every directory, and all third-party platforms.
Mostly consistent — but we know there are some inconsistencies in how we’re described or categorised in certain places.
Unsure — we haven’t checked what AI sources actually see when they look for us.
It would hesitate — there are conflicts, gaps, or different versions of our business across different sources.

Inconsistent identity is one of the most common reasons businesses are excluded entirely — not ranked lower. When signals conflict, the system doesn’t guess. It drops you.

Stage 02 — Validation

Would independent sources confirm your expertise — without relying on your own website?

Yes — we appear in industry directories, have press mentions, professional registrations, and multiple third-party references that confirm what we do.
Partially — we have some external presence, but it’s thin or inconsistent across sources.
Minimal — most of what exists about us online is content we’ve published ourselves.
None — we have no meaningful external corroboration from credible third-party sources.

AI systems trust what others confirm, not what you claim. A business corroborated across multiple independent sources is a defensible answer. One that only appears on its own website is a risk.

Stage 03 — Selection

If AI compared you side-by-side with your three closest competitors — would your difference be obvious and defensible?

Yes — our positioning, specialism, and differentiation are explicit, consistent, and clearly structured across our site and external sources.
Partially — we know what makes us different, but it isn’t clearly structured or consistently stated in machine-readable terms.
Weak — our differentiation is implied in our content but not explicitly defined.
No — there is nothing that clearly distinguishes us from competitors in a way AI could extract and use.

If the system can’t explain why you, it won’t choose you. This is where most capable businesses fall out — not through lack of quality, but through lack of clarity.

Stage 04 — Citation

Can AI extract and reuse your key business information — without guessing?

Yes — we use schema markup, structured FAQs, and clearly formatted content designed around the questions our customers actually ask.
Partially — some content is well-structured, but most of our site is standard long-form text.
Minimal — our content is written well for human readers, but not structured for AI extraction.
No — we haven’t considered how AI systems read and extract information from our content at all.

Humans navigate content. AI extracts it. If your information isn’t structured for extraction, the system defaults to sources where it is. You become harder to recommend.

Stage 05 — Action

Could an AI system access live, reliable information about your business — right now?

Yes — we have APIs, live data feeds, or structured infrastructure that exposes current business information in real time.
In progress — we’re actively building toward this kind of infrastructure.
Not yet — but having read this, we understand why it’s going to matter.
No — this is the first time we’ve considered this as a business requirement.

This stage isn’t the priority today — but it will be within two years. AI is moving from answering questions to completing tasks. The businesses with live infrastructure will shape who gets used, not just recommended.

Every gap above represents decisions you are not seeing. Customers are being filtered before they ever reach you — before your website is visited, before your reputation has a chance to speak.
