The Copacabana: How a Yumbo Centre Cocktail Bar Gets Chosen Before the Night Out Starts
How a custom website, a cocktail engine, an insider guide to the Yumbo and hands-on review guidance took The Copacabana from #92 to #10 on Tripadvisor in six weeks.
The Challenge
Holidaymakers in Playa del Inglés rarely choose a bar by walking past it. They choose on their phone, usually before they leave the hotel: in Google Maps, on Tripadvisor, in Facebook groups, and increasingly by asking an AI assistant.
The Copacabana had a loyal following inside the Yumbo Centre but a weak presence at that moment of choice. The owners, Scott and Grant, did not have control of their Google Business Profile or their Tripadvisor listing, the old website did little work, and the listing sat near the bottom of the local nightlife rankings.
The searches that matter, such as “best cocktail bars Yumbo”, “gay bars Playa del Inglés” and “drag show Gran Canaria”, were owned by travel guides, review platforms and bigger venues. Demand for any single bar is small and seasonal; the larger demand sits in broad terms like “nightlife Playa del Inglés”, where no single venue will ever be the top result. So the brief was not only to rank. It was to be the bar people have already chosen before the night begins.
The Solution
The work began in April 2026, when Sean showed the owners a working prototype of a cocktail selection tool. It grew from that one idea, make the cocktails the thing people remember, into a system that covers the whole night out.
Deciding at the hotel: the website. A custom WordPress theme that is fast on a phone and unmistakably on brand, with structured data for the bar and its events, and guides that answer what visitors actually search for: drag shows, cocktail bars, gay Playa del Inglés and the Yumbo itself.
Deciding at the hotel: Google and Tripadvisor. Sean helped the owners regain control of their Google Business Profile and their Tripadvisor listing, then showed them how to use both. With control back in their hands, Scott and Grant began encouraging guests to leave reviews and replying to them personally.
Walking the Yumbo: Out & About. The Copacabana team’s own reviews of where to eat and drink around the centre, including other venues. It makes Copa the insider’s guide to the Yumbo, and those pages already bring visitors to the site.
At the bar: the Copa Bar Engine. A cocktail finder and Copa Roulette, a spin-the-wheel for guests who cannot decide, built on the bar’s live menu and prices. Cocktails are the heart of The Copacabana, and the engine puts them first.
Arriving: the airport welcome pass. A QR code on a billboard at Gran Canaria baggage reclaim offers arriving groups a welcome drink, so The Copacabana is in their plans before they have reached their hotel.
What Made This Different
Four things make this case study different.
It is built around a night out, not a website. Each piece targets one moment a visitor decides where to go: arriving, planning at the hotel, walking the Yumbo, at the bar, and afterwards. The website is only one of those moments.
The owners do the most important part. The fastest result, the Tripadvisor climb, came from putting control of Google and Tripadvisor back with Scott and Grant and showing them how to use it. Good guidance that the client can carry on without us is worth more than a report.
Recommending the neighbours. Out & About reviews other venues in the Yumbo. That builds trust with visitors and makes Copa a source rather than an advert.
Ranked but not recommended. A bar can rank and still not be the one a visitor picks. This is the practical side of our research on why ranking and being chosen are different outcomes, and it is why the work covers reviews, guides and the bar itself, not just search positions. The Results
Tripadvisor: from 10 reviews and #92 of 108 nightlife venues in San Bartolomé de Tirajana in mid-August 2026, to 33 reviews and #10 of 108 on 24 September 2026, rated 5.0 throughout.
Google: The Copacabana ranks first for its own name (“copacabana yumbo”, average position 1.3; “copacabana gran canaria”, 2.05) and appears on page one for “best cocktail bars yumbo centre” and “gay cocktail bars yumbo centre” (checked 24 September 2026). Its Google Business Profile holds a 4.6 rating from 117 reviews.
Search Console: 123 clicks from 2,809 impressions in the new site’s first seven weeks, at an average position of about 6.
Airport welcome pass: claimed by 45 arriving groups between July and September 2026.
The owners: they describe the site as fab and on brand, they have had consistently positive feedback from customers, and they have since introduced SEO Strategy to other venues and event organisers in Gran Canaria.
The new site looks fab and it is completely on brand. We have had so much positive feedback from our customers, and Sean’s guidance on Google and Tripadvisor has really helped us.
Frequently Asked Questions
What did SEO Strategy build for The Copacabana?
A custom WordPress website and theme, the Copa Bar Engine plugin (cocktail finder, Copa Roulette, live menus, prices and events), the Out & About guide to the Yumbo, local guides, structured data and an airport QR welcome pass, plus hands-on guidance to regain control of Google Business Profile and Tripadvisor.
How did The Copacabana climb from #92 to #10 on Tripadvisor?
In about six weeks, from mid-August to 24 September 2026. Once the owners had control of their listings and knew how to use them, they encouraged guests to leave reviews and replied to them personally. Reviews rose from 10 to 33, all rated 5.0.
What is the Copa Bar Engine?
A custom WordPress plugin that runs the bar’s cocktail finder, Copa Roulette spin-the-wheel, menus, prices and events from one place, so the owners can update everything themselves.
What is Out & About?
The Copacabana team’s own reviews of places to eat and drink around the Yumbo Centre and Maspalomas, including other venues. It helps visitors plan their evening and positions Copa as the insider’s guide to the centre.
Can this approach work for other bars and venues?
Yes. The principle is to be present at each moment a visitor decides: arriving, planning at the hotel, walking around, at the bar and afterwards. The tools differ by venue; the timeline does not.
