The Challenge

Poppy Brooks is a Winchester-based creative director, illustrator, and visual development artist who works across film and TV concepts, editorial illustration, mural commissions, and creative consultancy for charities and purpose-driven organisations. She came to SEO Strategy Ltd needing a site that could do several distinct jobs at once: showcase a multi-discipline creative portfolio, present illustration services with clear guide pricing, position her as a freelance creative director for film and TV, and sell her debut book — My Journey To You — directly to readers online, without inventory, without a fulfilment warehouse, and without paying Shopify £25+ a month for the privilege.

The ecommerce challenge was the most structurally interesting. Print-on-demand publishing through Lulu Direct means Lulu charges Poppy's card for each book the day an order is placed, while Stripe — which takes the reader's payment — holds the money for three to seven working days before releasing it to her bank. The two money rails never touch, and without understanding the gap, a new seller can find themselves cash-flow negative in a busy week even while making a profit on every sale. The site needed to handle this gracefully: automatic order approval so Lulu fulfils without manual intervention, a float structure Poppy could understand and manage, and a customer experience indistinguishable from a mainstream shop.

On the portfolio and services side, the challenge was structural. Poppy's work spans industries and disciplines that don't obviously belong on the same page — a mural for a Hampshire venue and a character brief for a TV pilot share the same creative intelligence but speak to completely different commissioning clients. The site needed to hold all of that without looking scattered, and without burying the commercial services (creative consultant, illustration pricing, freelance collaborations) under portfolio imagery that doesn't convert.

BESPOKE THEME DESIGN AND BUILD. The xenaproductions theme is a clean, custom WordPress theme designed around Poppy's visual identity. Full responsive design, dark and light presentation modes where appropriate per section, custom page templates for each distinct content type: portfolio hub, individual illustration pages, Film & TV concepts, painting template for individual art projects, creative consultant, illustration services and pricing, IP and rights explainer, shop, and contact. Each template is purpose-built — not a generic page template with shortcodes injected.

WOOCOMMERCE PRINT-ON-DEMAND SHOP. The shop is a lean, zero-inventory WooCommerce installation. No warehouse, no stock, no packing room. WooCommerce handles the product, basket, checkout, and order records. Stripe takes card, Apple Pay, and Google Pay payments at roughly 1.5% + 20p per transaction. Lulu Direct handles print (a 31-page hardcover at premium colour, glossy cover), fulfilment (£1.55 flat per order), and UK Royal Mail delivery to the customer's door. Per-book economics at launch: customer pays £24.99, Stripe takes ~£0.57, Lulu takes £13.84 print + £3.94 postage + £1.55 fulfilment, Poppy keeps £5.09 — roughly 20% of retail, with zero stock risk and zero monthly platform fee.

THE CASHFLOW ARCHITECTURE. The most important invisible piece. Lulu charges Poppy's card on day one at order approval. Stripe releases the customer's payment to Poppy's bank on day three to seven (first-ever payout: day seven). The site uses automatic order approval — once the one-hour cancellation window passes, orders approve and route to Lulu without manual intervention. An emergency brake is built in: if sales ever outrun Poppy's float, switching Lulu back to manual approval queues orders safely until the card is topped up. A worked cashflow explainer (£249.90 in on day one, £193.30 out to Lulu same day, £244.20 Stripe payout by day three to seven, £50.90 profit across 10 books) was produced and signed off before go-live so Poppy understood the model before the first sale.

FILM AND TV CONCEPTS PORTFOLIO. A dedicated section for Poppy's film and TV visual development work — character concept art, world-building illustration, storyboard-adjacent portfolio items. SEO-structured around the rising search terms identified in keyword research: "visual development artist" (+40% year-on-year), "storyboard artist UK" (+75% year-on-year). Both terms are low-competition and climbing. The Film & TV page targets these specifically.

ILLUSTRATION SERVICES AND GUIDE PRICING. A transparent pricing architecture — guide price bands for illustration commissions, mural work, portrait commissions, and licensing — structured to match the way commissioning clients actually search. "Book cover illustrator", "freelance illustrator UK", "illustrator near me" are mapped to specific service pages rather than scattered across the portfolio. The keyword research surfaces that "book formatting service" attracts up to £17.56 per click from publishers with budget — the Book Development services section was built to capture that intent.

KEYWORD RESEARCH AND SEO CONTENT ARCHITECTURE. Full UK keyword research using Google Keyword Planner (May 2025–April 2026 data). Head term "freelance graphic artist" at 1,000 searches per month is the dominant term — nearly five times the next keyword. A dedicated freelance illustrator and graphic artist services page captures the head term and its UK variants. Five content moves identified and implemented in order of commercial priority: claim "concept art portfolio" (110/mo, low competition); point the Film & TV page at the rising terms; build the local base with Google Business Profile and "artist Winchester" on About and Contact; create the freelance positioning page for the 1,000/mo head term; publish a "how to commission an artist" guide targeting the 30/mo informational query that feeds every commission service.

What Made This Different

Three things make this case study technically distinctive.

First, the cashflow architecture. Most "website with a shop" projects end at go-live. This one required understanding and designing around the gap between Lulu's charge-on-day-one fulfilment model and Stripe's three-to-seven-day payout cycle before a single order was placed. The worked cashflow explainer — produced as a client-facing PDF with real per-book numbers confirmed on the first test order — is the kind of output most web designers do not produce because they do not understand the underlying financial mechanics. Poppy needed to understand the model before the first sale, not after a confusing first month of bank statements.

Second, the keyword research driving the site architecture is unusually specific to a creative practitioner's real commercial opportunity. The head term "freelance graphic artist" at 1,000/mo was identified as nearly five times larger than the next keyword in the set, and the Film & TV section was built specifically around two rising terms ("visual development artist" +40% YoY, "storyboard artist UK" +75% YoY) that match Poppy's actual practice. This is not generic "illustrator SEO" — it is keyword architecture built for what she actually does and what paying commissioning clients actually search for.

Third, the bespoke theme handles four functionally distinct website types on a single WordPress installation: creative portfolio, professional services, ecommerce shop, and editorial content. A multi-discipline creative practitioner's site is structurally harder than a single-service business site because the audience and commercial intent differ significantly between sections. The theme architecture keeps this coherent without defaulting to a generic gallery template or a page-builder layout that breaks under the content weight.

This is the kind of web design and SEO work SEO Strategy Ltd delivers for creative and ecommerce clients across Hampshire and the South — specialist builds where the technical and commercial thinking matter as much as the visual design, delivered directly by Sean Mullins without account management overhead or a junior team. The Results

The site is built, launched, and live at [XENA_LIVE_URL] as of [XENA_LAUNCH_DATE].

ZERO-INVENTORY ECOMMERCE LIVE. My Journey To You is available to buy at retail price through the Xena Productions shop. Orders route automatically to Lulu Direct for printing and UK Royal Mail fulfilment. No stock held, no warehouse cost, no monthly platform fee. The shop runs on WooCommerce and Stripe — costs only exist when a book sells.

CASHFLOW ARCHITECTURE CONFIRMED ON TEST ORDER. The first live test order confirmed the per-book economics: Lulu's £1.55 flat fulfilment fee charges per order (not per book, so multi-copy orders improve margin), Stripe's 1.5% + 20p per transaction matches the model, and the automatic approval + Stripe payout timing works as designed. The cashflow explainer was produced from real order data, not projections.

MULTI-DISCIPLINE PORTFOLIO LIVE. Twenty scaffold-managed pages covering the full creative portfolio: art projects (The Drawing Woman, The Torches of Control, The Quiet Fight), film and TV concepts, illustrations, writing and books, creative consultant, illustration services and pricing, IP and rights explainer, charity partnerships, and freelance and collaborations. Each section is purpose-built with its own template.

SEO FOUNDATION IN PLACE. Meta titles and descriptions across all pages. Schema markup on portfolio, services, shop, and contact. Keyword-targeted content on the Film & TV, freelance graphic artist, and illustration services pages. The site is built to be indexed and cited — not just visually designed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lulu Direct and how does it work with WooCommerce?

Lulu Direct is a print-on-demand publisher that integrates with WooCommerce. When a customer places an order on the Xena Productions shop, the order routes automatically to Lulu, which prints the book to spec (hardcover, premium colour, 31 pages, glossy cover), packages it in Xena-branded packaging, and ships it to the customer by Royal Mail. Lulu charges the seller's card on day one at order approval. There is no stock held, no warehouse needed, and no per-unit cost until a book actually sells. The £1.55 flat fulfilment fee is charged once per order regardless of how many copies are in the basket, which means multi-copy orders have better unit economics.

Why build the shop on WooCommerce rather than Shopify?

For a single-SKU print-on-demand shop at this scale, WooCommerce on an existing WordPress site has no monthly platform fee — Shopify starts at around £25 per month regardless of whether a single book sells. At £5.09 profit per book, the Shopify monthly fee would consume the profit from five books before a penny of genuine margin is kept. WooCommerce is free, integrates natively with Lulu Direct via the WooCommerce app, and sits on the same WordPress installation as the rest of the Xena Productions site. The only costs are per-transaction Stripe fees (1.5% + 20p per sale) and the existing SiteGround hosting — both of which scale proportionally with actual sales.

How does the cashflow work when Lulu charges before Stripe pays out?

Two separate money rails run in parallel. On day one, customers' card payments are collected by Stripe and held. Also on day one, Lulu charges the seller's card for printing, postage, and fulfilment (£19.33 per book). Stripe releases the customer payment to the seller's bank account on day three to seven. A small float — roughly £20 per book sold in a week — needs to be available on the card saved with Lulu. The site uses automatic order approval so Lulu fulfils without manual work per order. If sales ever outrun the float, switching Lulu to manual approval queues orders safely until the card is topped up. Nothing is lost — it just pauses until approved.

What keyword research underpinned the Xena Productions site architecture?

Full UK Google Keyword Planner research (May 2025–April 2026). The dominant head term is "freelance graphic artist" at 1,000 searches per month — nearly five times larger than the next keyword in the set. Five content moves were prioritised: claiming "concept art portfolio" (110/mo, low competition), pointing the Film & TV page at "visual development artist" (+40% YoY) and "storyboard artist UK" (+75% YoY), building the local base with Google Business Profile and "artist Winchester" signals, creating a freelance illustrator and graphic artist positioning page for the head term, and publishing a "how to commission an artist" guide. Advertiser bid data was used to identify commercial intent — "book cover illustrator" attracts up to £9.14 per click, indicating publishers with real budget searching for exactly what Poppy offers.

Is this approach replicable for other creative practitioners and self-publishing authors?

For creative practitioners selling directly online — illustrators, artists, authors, photographers — the core stack (WordPress, WooCommerce, Lulu Direct for print, Stripe for payments) is replicable and well-suited to anyone who wants to sell physical products without holding inventory. The cashflow architecture and float discipline apply to any print-on-demand model. The keyword research and content architecture are always specific to the individual practitioner's discipline and geographic market. Discovery call first; scope second; proposal third.
